Slavonija, just before the war. Carpenter Kuzma Glavan falls in love with the young village teacher Ana.
Her aggressive fiance Đuka can’t take the fact that Ana’s leaving him. Kuzma gets an order from the priest to make a statue of the Madonna for the village church.
